Your mini jungle

Build upwards with secure branches, broad leaves and shaded resting places. Provide clean, dechlorinated water in an accessible dish and let leaf surfaces dry between mistings. Add upright cork tubes or suitable tree-hole-style retreats, with a moist sheltered area inside each.

Minimum vivarium

60 × 45 × 60 cm (width × depth × height). A compatible adult pair. Larger groups need more space and careful monitoring.

Bigger is typically better for your mini jungle. These are minimum enclosure dimensions, not a target to squeeze in extra frogs. Allow for the space taken by drainage, substrate and planting, and increase the enclosure size if usable space is reduced.

Temperature and humidity

  • Daytime target: 24–27°C. Around 21–24°C at night.
  • Relative humidity: 60–80% with humid retreats. Brief rises after misting are normal; provide airflow and avoid keeping the whole enclosure constantly soaked.

Check conditions where the frogs actually sit, with a thermometer and hygrometer. Use a thermostat for any heating and keep the enclosure out of direct sun.

Food and egg feeding

Feed suitably sized live insects, with appropriate amphibian calcium and vitamin supplementation.

Obligate egg-feeding tadpoles? No. Tadpoles do not depend on unfertilised eggs supplied by their mother; use a suitable species-specific rearing diet.

About these frogs

The Yucatan casque headed tree frog is an unusual looking frog, the top of the head of all Triprion species are heavily modified with bony ridges and projections, in this species a bony ridge around the front of the snout and the top of the head make for a protective shield with frogs utilising spikey bromeliads to refuge in, once backed down the bromeliad urn the head then forms a protective door sealing in the moisture!

UK captive bred Yucatan casque headed tree frogs, around 3 months out of water and looking fantastic. Perfect miniatures of their parents.
