Triprion petastatus, Yucatan casque headed tree frogs

The Yucatan casque headed tree frog is an unusual looking frog, the top of the head of all Triprion species are heavily modified with bony ridges and projections, in this species a bony ridge around the front of the snout and the top of the head make for a protective shield with frogs utilising spikey bromeliads to refuge in, once backed down the bromeliad urn the head then forms a protective door sealing in the moisture!
